Rough Start to the Season
The Atlanta Falcons are off to a rough start.
At 1-2, panic is already setting in.
The low point came in Week 3, a 30-0 shutout loss to the Carolina Panthers.
In response, the team made a move.
Wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard has been fired just three games into the 2025 season.
Hilliard’s Quick Fall
Hilliard wasn’t exactly on the hot seat before this year.
He helped guide Drake London to over 1,000 yards in 2024.
Darnell Mooney nearly hit that mark as well under his guidance.
Now, only months later, he’s out of a job.
Talk about a quick reversal of fortune.
Why the Move Happened
Reports say the firing is performance-based.
The wide receiver group has struggled badly.
Drops, miscommunication, and poor routes have plagued the unit.
Injuries have made things worse.
But it’s fair to ask if Hilliard is being scapegoated.
He’s got a respected coaching resume and plenty of experience as a player.
What’s Next for Hilliard
Hilliard shouldn’t stay unemployed for long.
With his background, another NFL team could scoop him up quickly.
Even a consulting or assistant role could be on the table this year.
Enter T.J. Yates
The Falcons are turning to T.J. Yates.
The passing game coordinator will now take over Hilliard’s duties.
Yates has history with the receivers, including London.
But the Falcons’ passing attack has been flat so far.
It won’t be an easy fix.
Bigger Issues in Atlanta
Firing one coach doesn’t solve everything.
The Falcons’ offense has been a mess.
The lone bright spot has been Bijan Robinson, who continues to shine.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has to improve.
The offense needs rhythm, execution, and—most importantly—points.
Until that happens, it’s hard to see a quick turnaround.
The Falcons’ problems go far beyond one assistant coach.
