Al Michaels’ NFL Return: WFAN’s Gregg Giannotti Slams ‘Thursday Night Football’ Decision as Big Mistake

The debate is heating up over Al Michaels’ decision to return for another season of Thursday Night Football on Prime Video. Let’s be real, the guy’s a legend – one of the greatest broadcasters of all time. But is it time for him to hang up his mic? WFAN’s Gregg Giannotti thinks so, and I’ve got to agree with him. Michaels has had an incredible career, but it’s hard to deny that his performance has slipped in recent seasons. He just doesn’t sound like himself anymore.

Giannotti put it bluntly on his show, saying “Al Michaels calling games just has to stop at this point.” He’s not trying to be harsh, but rather honest. Michaels has earned the right to keep doing what he loves, but at what cost? The quality of the broadcast? I think Giannotti’s suggestion to replace him with Kevin Harlan is a great one. Harlan brings a level of energy that’s missing from Michaels’ current commentary style.

On the other hand, Giannotti’s co-host Boomer Esiason has a different take. He thinks that when you’re a legend like Michaels, you get to keep doing what you do for as long as you want. And I get that – the guy’s a icon in the sports broadcasting world. He’s called games for NBC’s Sunday Night Football and ABC’s Monday Night Football, and his experience is undeniable. But is that enough to justify keeping him in the booth if his performance is no longer up to par?

Michaels has been the lead play-by-play voice for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football package since 2022, and it’s been reported that he’ll be back for the 2026 season. While some will celebrate his return, others will be scratching their heads, wondering why he’s not giving up the mic. One thing’s for sure – the debate will continue, and we’ll all be tuning in to see how it plays out. Will Michaels prove his doubters wrong, or will it be time to pass the torch to someone new? Only time will tell.
