So the Detroit Lions just took down the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, and let me tell you, their running back David Montgomery was on fire. The guy carried the ball 12 times for a whopping 151 yards and two touchdowns. But here’s the thing – he’s not taking any of the credit for himself. Instead, he’s giving all the props to the Lions’ offensive line.
Apparently, the O-line caught some heat after the first week of the season, and Montgomery thinks they’re due for some serious recognition. “We’ve got the best group up front in the league,” he said. And it’s hard to argue with that after the way they performed on Monday night. Montgomery made it clear that without his teammates blocking for him, he wouldn’t have been able to make those big plays.
He even went so far as to say that his job is the easy part, and that the guys up front are the ones doing the real heavy lifting. “You can’t play this game by yourself,” he said. “The guys up front, the receivers, the tight ends… you can’t do it without those guys being selfless and moving people out of the way.” It’s refreshing to see a player giving credit where credit is due like that.
One of the highlights of the game was Montgomery’s 72-yard run in the third quarter, which set up a Jahmyr Gibbs touchdown. But even though that play was a huge momentum-shifter, Montgomery was actually kind of disappointed in himself for not taking it all the way to the house. “I’m more disappointed that I got caught,” he said. Yeah, I think it’s safe to say that’s the only thing he’s got to be disappointed about after a performance like that. The guy was a beast on Monday night, and it’s going to be fun to watch him and the Lions’ O-line keep rolling this season.
