Secondary Gets a Boost
Big news out of Washington: the Commanders have signed veteran safety Darnell Savage.
The move comes at the right time, with Will Harris heading to the Reserve/Injured list.
Savage brings plenty of experience.
He has played 87 games with 82 starts since entering the league in 2019.
His career totals include 354 tackles, 38 pass breakups, 10 interceptions, and a sack.
Career Highlights in Green Bay
Savage was a first-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2019, going 21st overall.
He became an immediate starter and held down a key role in their secondary for five seasons.
His best year came in 2020, when he led the team with four interceptions.
That season put his name firmly on the map as one of the NFC’s top safeties.
Recent Stops Before Washington
Savage’s career has had some ups and downs since his Packers days.
He spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024.
But things didn’t last long—he was released earlier this year after just two games in 2025.
Now, Washington is giving him another shot, hoping he still has something left to offer.
College Pedigree
Before the NFL, Savage starred at the University of Maryland.
He recorded 182 tackles, eight interceptions, and scored two touchdowns in college.
That playmaking ability made him a standout prospect and led to his first-round selection.
What He Brings to Washington
The Commanders’ secondary just got a lot more experienced.
Savage isn’t a journeyman hanging on—he’s proven he can produce at a high level.
The big question now: can he stabilize the back end of Washington’s defense?
If so, this could be a key move in turning their season around.
